　　Building a Harmonious Society

　　Development in the new century involves building a harmonious society. Faced with this new concept, some people still maintain that the urgent task is to develop economy on a large scale. They hold that many people are living in poverty and can't afford the basic schooling for their children. And they also believe we can strike a balance between the developed east and the developing west by further developing our economy.

　　On the other hand, there are many people who insist that environmental protection is of first importance. They claim that we have only one mother earth. If our environment is heavily polluted, we could not survive on this planet. Second, they believe that the rapid and advanced development of economy leads to many of the serious problems. If the problem is left unsolved, we may soon have no water fit to drink, no clean air to breathe, let alone develop our economy.

　　In my opinion, both economy and environmental protection are indispensable. Without economic development, we would remain backward. And without environmental protection, we would lose our chance of survival.
